Vappodes phalaenopsis (Cooktown Orchid)
Vappodes phalaenopsis (Cooktown Orchid)
Originally found in north-eastern Queensland Australia from Cooktown to Font Hills west of Mount Molloy.
coastal scrub, littoral rainforests, riverine vegetation, monsoon thickets, vine thickets, swamps and gullies in open forest. Plants grow on trees and rocks and rapidly recolonise disturbed sites
Taxonomy: Vappodes, originally described as section Phalaenanthe within Dendrobium, was recently redescribed at generic rank (Jones and Clements 2002).
Nomenclature: Vappodes M.A.Clem. and D.L.Jones, Orchadian 13(11): 492 (2002).
Type species: Dendrobium bigibbum Lindl. [Vappodes bigibba (Lindl.) M.A.Clem. and D.L.Jones].
Dendrobium sect. Phalaenanthe Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 1: 447 (1912).
Flowering period: March-July in Cooktown but it started to spike for me mid-September and it opened most of its blooms a week ago and had buds still to open. This is the second time this has bloomed for me; I got it from the seller blooming size but with no flowers yet.
I had it all summer on direct sunlight and it loves to drink and eat a lot…this orchid doesnt need a winter rest, it is perennial and evergreen
---Most of the infos I got from the Australian Government site---

Wow - happy plant!
Your's looks quite different from mine, tho I do have the v. compactum. I'm getting some fat buds on mine, tho not nearly as many as yours. Good growing!

Thanks, Sonya ! Maybe because I subjected my plant to the Manhattan summer heat on the fire escape...had I placed it indoors as soon as it spiked, I could also have fat and bigger buds...I have no complaints this orchid is amazingly showing a magnificent display of blooms and its long lasting (almost a month and a half now) and theres buds yet to open...I might have these blooming till xmas LOL

Excellent!
the shape of yours is a bit different from mine (color too, tho I know the color can vary on these).
I'm stressing on what to do with mine right now - it's been outside, then suddenly the weather got very chilly. Been in the garage a few nights. It's mounted and hard to hang in a window with the spikes on it. I've also lost buds and spikes on den-phals inside, as well as blooms being short lived, despite my house being on the cool side... So, I've been undecided if I should bring in my in spike and blooming den-phals *sigh*

The weather is strange...we had early snowstorm Halloween and botched up the fine autumn weather in Manhattan...I suggest you put the spiking plants indoors to save them from the frost...maybe a couple of weeks and it will be warmer and you can put them outdoors again...you are in CA you dont have 11 inches of snow to deal with everytime it blizzards in the east coast.

Cooktown Orchid - State Flower of Queensland
I dont know where you got your photo but
my orchid is similar to most of these.
the petals dark violet and pointy: yours is fanlike curve and light colored
