Default Diplocaulobium tipuliferum 'Wilbur #1'

So glad I only have one class on Fridays! These flowers only last a day, maybe 2, but they also develop quickly (unlike some other orchids that tease us for months before finally opening )

I got this as a division over the summer. It has a very nice jasmine scent.

First picture is a day or two before opening.

Thanks Kim and Rosie! Silly me, I thought it might last a bit longer since it had opened so late, but it had closed by evening.

Extremely large flower for such a small plant and really nice too. If I were guessing I would put it in the Bulbophyllum group. Which, by the way, is the largest in the orchid family. Your thermometer tells me it is a warm grower. This is one that I could add to my miniature collection.

Actually, it's more closely related to Dendrobiums. I wouldn't have made that connection if I hadn't done a little research when I got it.

Also, the temp in my tank has stayed around 76F daytime, so not that warm. The picture is from an odd angle, so there are probably some optical tricks working on the thermometer.

The flowers are relatively large. The tallest pbulb and leaf is about 24cm (~10.5 inches). This is a division from a very large specimen plant, probably about the same height, though it had mounded up a bit, and easily 1.5-2 ft across. Not that one would have to let it get that large. It probably had over a hundred pbulbs! When that bloomed it was truly spectacular! For a few hours at least.
