Waaa one of my buds is beginning to blast. Tese are still not open but looked fine and the smallest ones at the tip of the spike were still developing and getting larger-very slowly. This morning I noticed the 2nd most mature bud is going to blast! I did start misting the whole plant thinking it was too dry maybe for the buds to open. I know the buds were getting a very fine light mist too. Is that a big no no? I figure in nature they get wet. I know not to wet them once they are open.

If anyone has an idea so I can prevent it on the rest of the buds I would appreciate it.

I just ordered this same orchid from a grower in California (and yours is adorable)--I'll be watching your 'chid to see how long it takes to bloom--please post pics when it does so I'll have some clue as to what to expect.

Silken, don't panic yet...Sometimes the first bud(s) blast but the rest are fine. I don't know why.

Keep giving it good conditions - light, consistant temps and regular water.

Hoping for the best,
Maureen

I know how disappointing that might make you feel after a long wait and building anticipatino...observing the buds growing bigger and bigger day by day.

Well, fine misting on the buds and even on the flowers cause no farm as long as they dry out quick. (good light and ventilation and temperature). If not, misting on the flowers can invite fugus spots.

Check and see if the air is too dry. Misting will not help much as the moist will dry out quickly in the normal household in the winter time. but that is not to say not to do it.
Also, check to see if the buds are not getting too strong light.

If all is right and the buds still blast, then it must the plant itself that's a problem.

Thanks mspatt, it is adorable and I have now been waiting 3 months since I first saw the spike starting. I will definitely post photos IF they ever open!

Thanks nutgirl. Makes me feel better. It's my only plant like this and first bloom so not sure how they act. The buds looked healthy up to yesterday when the one looks a bit sunken and I am sure it will blast.

NYCorchidman, It's in a fairly cool greenhouse with humidity in the 50 to 60 % range-not high but best I can do. I do have it on a warmer shelf with good air movement and good light. Maybe I should back it away from the T5. I just mist to let them get a wee bit more moisture and there are water containers on the shelves with the plants to help with humidity. The smaller buds still seem to be growing and reaching more for the light. Guess I'll just cross my fingers and wait and see. I can't believe how long these are taking and I keep wondering if they will ever actually open?? The plant looks quite healthy.

The humidity range you have is perfectly fine for the type of dendrobium you have. I have one white dendrobium hybrid spiking and it should open up in about two weeks or so. The humidity level I have here is about 50. no blasting ever!

You mentioned the plant being close to the light source.
It could be that the bud got damaged by being too close maybe?
Mine is growing by the window getting afternoon direct sun but it is week this time of the year.

How cool is your greenhouse? The lower the temperature, the slower the bud development. Too cool will cause bud blasting and even yellowing and dropping of leaves for these types of dendrobium hybrids. Their parents are mostly from warmer regions around Australia and tropical islands near Australia.
They don't take cool very well.

One bud has finally opened after I brought it into the house! I am so happy. I started a new thread for it here:

Mine was in bloom when I got it, so I won't be of much help. The only thing I can say is that your pic looks like the plant I have sitting on my shelves
