Its not common, your plant seems to be under stress also. This should have a few more flowers on the spike. I'd look at changing the mix & growing area. Its not a fast grower but strong.
all my chids grow outside, basically on a wire stand under a verandah. It is not exposed to frost but we do get zero or 1 degree Celcius temps here in winter. I will put them in the rain very occasionally over winter but not too much water.
Roy, curious, why do you think its under stress? This is only its first flowering, and it has 4 spikes (not all are visible in pic).
The plant I would think is a division of a plant thats been around for a while as the "Peach" variety is well known to me. The canes in the pic look hard and a little dry. This plant would appreciate some protection from the cold in Winter as it has a lot of D. fleckeri in it.
