Default Den. loddigessi new plants

Hi den lovers,

I am expecting a shipment of 3 den.loddigessi almost mature plants either Thurs. or Fri from Orchids.com. I'm told they are in 2" pots. I'm planning to mount them on a 14" grapevine wreath. I also know they are vigorus growers hence the size of the wreath. Has anybody ever tried this? Any suggestions on mounting would be appreciated. I have green moss, spag moss and not sure if I should mix them together and add more as they grow around the wreath or set it up now by wedging it in between the wrappings and securing with fishline. I promise to take pics when its done.

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine

Last year, a friend gave me a small cutting, maybe 2 or 3 inches big. I mounted it on a 12 x 12 tree fern plaque I had, using just a little sphag to protect the roots from the fishing line. A few months ago, I removed the line and the sphag as the plant has taken over this plaque and is well secured by it's own roots and no other support system...

Thanks for the info Suzanne, It doesn't look like I'll need too much spag to get them started. Have you seen this plant in bloom?

I just used enough sphag to cover the roots where the fishing line was so they wouldn't get cut. Now, there's no sphag or line at all.

This plant creates and lots of keikis...once their roots grow to over an inch or so, I remove them and just stick them into another area of the tree fern. You wouldn't be able to do this with any other mount except for maybe Epi-Web so I suggest tree fern plaques for this one. Here's a pic of when it was blooming in April...if you compare the pic I first posted in this thread to this one, you can see where the keikis have filled in the plaque

Hi Lorraine -
I see that both you and Suzanne are in FL (LA, me). My opinion only, but sphagnum, here, turns really toxic in just about a year. I never, ever use it for anything. And plants that I buy mounted/potted with it get re-done as soon as I can get to it. Disgusting stuff, IMO.
My Dend. is on a grapevine mount with 'nothing' and it does fine. I think this plant likes to get some moisture throughout the year to bloom well. I at first treated it like the deciduous dendrobiums, and it was not too happy. I don't fertilize in winter, though.
8-10 lb. test line is really good for mounting plants, and when you cut it, very easy to remove.
Regards - Nancy

I use a bit of sphag between the line and the roots on every mount I do...but as soon as the plant is self-anchored, it all gets removed

Thanks for the info Suzanne & Nancy.

I hope my mounting works as good as yours.

Well my plants arrived and they look great. I've decided to mount 2 on the grapevine and 1 on the tree fern. Just have to go get the tree fern. Have either of you used the green moss? It looks much different than the spag. Some use it decoratively and lining baskets. Any idea if it is a problem? I mounted a Den. wasilii the other day. mixed a little spag with it. I'll take a pic and post it on my gallery.
