If you search the web under 'Dendrobium loddigesii culture' you will quickly find that this is a deciduous species that requires little or no moisture and cooler temperatures during the winter months. Plants will benefit from maximum light levels in winter, conforming to conditions in its natural habitat.

Don't take my word for it, look it up!

Regards,
Rick

Lorraine, I have two of my dends mounted in a tree now and I use no sphag. They are just tied to the tree where they sit in a crook with line (not too tight) and the roots are so healthy, no medium needed at all. Just the tree bark does fine. I mist them everyday of course, and that's all my dends out there seem to need. They are growing better than they ever have.

Suzanne, your Dend. loddigessi is gorgeous. That is my current dream plant. I still haven't acquired one. I ordered one once, thought it was on its merry way, but the seller notified me they were out weeks later, except for very young ones, and I wanted one that was closer to blooming at the time. I really want to get one soon. Thanks for sharing that pic!

Thanks for that info, Rick!

I got my dendrobium loddigesii in Sept 2005. It had been newly potted with fine fir bark and perlite in a 2" plastic pot that I nestled into a cork slab. As the growths lengthened and aerial roots developed, I tacked them onto the cork slab. Eventually, I cut the bottom of the plastic pot, covering it with a piece of nylon mesh to keep the media in place.

The photo is of loddigesii's first bloom in April 2007.

PS - In summer months, our dendrobium loddigesii is watered daily since it is in direct line with the 'watering hanger.'

In winter, it gets watered every ten days to two weeks. It never completely dries our and my plant is not deciduous.

I was given a very small cutting that a friend had in a 1" thumb pot with sphagnum. I mounted it to a piece of cork bark, with no additional moss. I left just a bit for the roots that were already in the pot. All the others were aerial, not needing moss. I adhered the plant to the bark with fishing line to give the new growths a chance to adhere roots to the bark. Its doing good so far.

I have also noticed that many of the preexisting aerial roots have begun to curve inwards towards the bark. Some of which were 1/2 to 1" away. It 'knows' the mount is there.

Interesting...

Thanks everybody for the information.

I have pics posted in my gallery and still can't figure out how to get them into this post. arrrg! If it's explained to me ss (simple/stupid) I'll edit them in.

Anyway, the 3 plants are now mounted and seem to be very happy 3 days later. It's been very hot here so I'm giving all my guys and extra misting.

If anyone is in the Delray, Fl area AOS is having another plant sale on Sept. 8th.

Hope you like my new plant stand. It has been in the family for years and was unrepairable for the designed function. It has graduated to a more worthy lifestyle.

Lorraine
