Carol that is fantastic! Dare I ask where you got it? If you told me, I'd call and buy one tomorrow even though I am on a buying freeze!

A very good purchase Carol. This has to be one of the more eye catching dendrobiums in circulation today. The plant is easy to grow and the flowers are very long lasting. Not to detract from Carol's posting, here is a plant that I bloomed in October 2010 which won the best dendrobium trophy at the Honolulu Orchid Society Show.

I would guess that the plant is about 5 years old. I obtained the plant three years ago (2008) from Orchid Center in Waianae, Hawaii. It was planted in New Zealand Sphagnum moss in a 3-inch clay pot. A year later I repotted the plant into a 4-inch pot using New Zealand Sphagnum moss to fill the void. In the photo above, the plant is in the 4-inch clay pot. I have the plant growing in a shade house with 50% shade cloth. The plant gets watered with the rest of my plants 2-3 times per week. I fertilize once per week all year round using a 13-2-13 formula fertilizer at 1 teaspoon per gallon. We have a lot of advantages growing orchids in Hawaii with our tropical climate. We all share the same kinds of problems with insects (thrips, mites, mealy bugs), snails, fungus, bacteria and weeds. I spray regularly to control most pests.

Tks for the tips, it ought to grow well here in Florida, we had a speaker from Hawaii at our last orchid society meeting and he uses MSU, I'll have to give low phosphate a try. Thanks for all your help

I'm also a strong believer in the MSU formulation. I've been using the low phosphate fertilizer for 5 years now on all of my orchids and I'm convinced it's the fertilizer to use.
