Den bracteosum flowers bloom from mature canes that have hardened off & dropped their leaves. The canes can bloom even if they have a few top leaves, but the canes may not bloom their full length (the unbloomed nodes may bloom the following season, after the leaves drop).
Normally, the plants bloom in late summer & continue in bloom for 4-5 months ... sometimes even longer. To insure that the mature canes bloom fully, once the canes harden & drop most of their leaves, you can remove the last few leaves on top. Do not remove leaves from the new canes that are still growing.
In general, new canes will initiate & develop in summer. The canes will be active until the later part of the following spring, at which time they will drop leaves & initiate buds. So it is very important not to remove any canes until after they have bloomed on all nodes, or have shriveled to skinny dried out sticks.
