Dend. Hollywood...what are Keiki? Female
Default Dend. Hollywood...what are Keiki?

So I bought a Dend. Hollywood and it's doing great as far as I can tell. I've had it probably a year now, maybe a little less. I'm just really wanting to find out what a keiki really is and why it forms? And I'm not sure if you can see in the 4th pic, but a small stalk started growing off the biggest stalk of the orchid. It grew about 1-1.5 inches and stopped and the top leaf turned brown and I pulled it off (the small dead leaf). Is that a keiki? And if so, what do I do with it? And then in the last 2 pics, if you can see, the plant has a small bump developing off of a joint...any ideas what this could be the beginning of?

Thanks!

A keiki is a baby plant/plantlet/pup growing off the mother plant (either on an old spike, or somewhere else on the plant, frequently from nodes on the plant)- they develop their own roots, and as such can be separated from the mother when they have sufficient root growth.

Best I can tell from your pix - the small new growth in #4 is a new cane starting - different from a keiki - it's growing along the rhizome, from the base of the older cane..
The brown area may have had water sitting in it, and rotted somewhat. If rot hasn't prgressed, it can continue to grow.

The bump in the last pix could be either a spike or keiki developing

Ok that helps tremendously! I think water must have sat on the small cane developing, but I've pulled off the rotted leaves and it's green underneath, so I'll just have to watch! The 'possible keiki' hasn't really grown anymore, so I'll keep a watch on it too. Thanks!
