Congratulations Hawaiian Sunshine Male
Default Congratulations Hawaiian Sunshine

Congratulations to Hawaiian Sunshine for being honored as “ORCHIDIST OF THE DECADE” (2000 to 2010) by the Honolulu Orchid Society, in its 73rd year.

He has served as an example, to all members of the Society: in his excellence in growing orchids; his willingness to share his knowledge with others, about orchids and their culture; and his extensive service to the Society as an officer and as ongoing chairman of numerous show & program committees.

This award is for the past DECADE, not for just being a past year’s officer or for a single act of kindness, or for growing the best plants last year. This is recognition for 10 years.

Mel Waki is an active Orchid Board member, who regularly posts photos of outstanding specimen plants, usually dendrobiums.

On OB, you get to see occasional photos of his excellent specimen plants. At our local shows, we get to see LOTS of his specimen plants …especially dendrobiums. Commercial people love him, because he will take one of our plants, grow it into a fantastic specimen & make everyone drool over it.

I have been to many orchid shows in many places & I can honestly say that, in my opinion, Mel may be the best grower anywhere, when it comes to BIG, EXCELLENTLY GROWN, SPECIMEN DENDROBIUM plants. Not just for a onetime single plant, but for plant after plant, year after year. And he’s smart enough to give his excellent plants the cultivar name ‘Pam’, after his wife.

I thought it appropriate to post here in the Dendrobium category.

Thank you everyone. Yes, it was quite an honor to be recognized by the Honolulu Orchid Society for the years of service. I also want to thank catwalker808 for taking the time to post the news on this Board. I treasure all my friends in the orchid community and am thankful for all the mentoring and coaching that I've received from old timers and commercial growers. I continue to learn from them. This may sound like a advertisement but I have won many trophies and awards for plants that I obtained from the nursery run by catwalker808. Buy good stock and the rewards will come.

Congratulations, Mel! I always know I'm in for a visual treat when I see your name on a thread. What incredible recognition from not only a venerable society but also from one of the world's great orchid nurseries...
