Dendrobium parishii NOT doing anything ??
Default Dendrobium parishii NOT doing anything ??

Hello all,
Wondering if you can help shed some light here :
My Dendrobium parishii ( blooming size - or has been told by seller when I bought it last year ) has been putting on winter rest (no water, just light spray every month or so ) since November, yet I am not seeing activitites on the plant as of now yet. The canes are bare ( no leaves ). They are plump and no sign of shriveling.
My Den nobile is already in bloom for a couple of weeks now, and Den loddigesii is about to bloom. These plants went on their winter rest at the same time as the Den parishii . They all are placed in same area where there are plenty of light. Night time temp in winter is in 50s F with day time temp in 60 - 70 F
So does anyone have any idea how I can "wake" my parishii up ? Even if it does not give out an buds, shouldn't it send out some leaves and/or new growth/roots ??
Thanks

Mine has been dormant for over a year. As for this last year, my situation is pretty much exactly what you describred in terms of conditions and state of the palnt.

When I was at the Pacific Orchid Expo about a month ago I asked my friends at Andy's about this. Catryn suggested waiting until it gets just a little bit warmer and said to then go ahead and start watering and feeding the crap out of it. I just started doing that about a week ago and so far nothing has happened yet. But we'll see...

I would also appreciate any ideas from others on this.

Don't worry about it guys. Den. parishii is one those specie that bloom very late in the season along with D. lanyiae and unicum. Mine usually blooms mid-late May, and the buds develope pretty quickly. It take about just a little over 2 weeks from bud to flower and usually new growths are already starting. Enjoy.

I second what wonderlen said, I have a pretty sizable parishii and it's not doing anything right now either. Bloom time varies slightly with mine but is usually at its peak in mid-May. New growths initiate almost exactly when the nodes start to swell with buds; this species seems to have a much more pronounced 'clock' than some in the section. Now if I could just figure out why mine smelled like burnt hair last year, before that it always smelled wonderfully of raspberry...

OK thanks for the responses.
Mine bloomed in the summer of 2009. Since then, there has been absolutely nothing.
Last season there was no new growth, no root growth, no blooms, nothing. Like it's in total suspended animation. And just like Okie's, the canes are not shrivelled and it'sobviously alive. I just wondered why it would take a whole year "off" like that.
This last winter I gave it a good rest, but now that it's warming up I'm starting to go ahead and water and feed - even though there are no signs of action yet.
Thanks for the encouragement thouh.

Ray, I've seen some other species in this section behave like your parishii. I think it can be caused by sudden change of growing conditions in the wrong season, in my case bringing plants from a hot Florida spring to my much cooler conditions. They generally seem to recover fine after an adjustment period with the new seasonal cycle. Good luck, it's a stunning species!
