LOL My dendrobium Nestor has decided to do something ....?

Never had a Nestor before so even though I read dry them off to rest I still hit it a little too much while watering the ones around it with the spray bottle....

It has not lost a single leaf all winter and in fact continued to grow new roots ....

I moved it to a higher light area and since everything around it is growing just figured oh well no bloom this year and started watering it with the others ....

Now we have either a keiki at each and every node....or its going to bloom anyways.A nice new lead is emerging from the Hydrotron at the base and we wil soon get to find out if this one can bloom even if they are not given as dry a conditon for winter as its said is needed.

will have to wait awhile to be sure , don't want to give false hope but I have never had my nestor make a keiki at every node or for that matter a keiki at all ..

They can definitely bloom without dryness and losing their leaves. Most of the species (and hybrids) in this section are actually cued to bloom more by temperature drops than by moisture levels. The dry rest follows from the coolness and leaf drop, at lower temps (or without leaves) an orchid needs less water because it transpires less and otherwise slows its metabolism. I'd be surprised if yours is keiki-ing at every node, my money's on those being flower spikes.

LOL I am not betting yet either way ...but I have managed to get 3 keikis from the damaged canes that were broke off so far ...I am hoping for a few blooms though

...i'm ended up here 'cause i searched Dendrobium Nestor & keiki...mine has got tons-o-keikis...normal or not?...first one got mounted and is doing great...have enough plants...don't want to encourage keikis and this has way more than other Dendrobiums i have...ideas? ...

The Yamamoto Orchids Web site [formerly said that:]

The brief version is keikiis rather than flowers are caused by fertilizing too late in the summer, and too-warm winters. They recommend stopping fertilizer completely in mid August. but continuing to water until growth matures. Then they recommend reducing water, but they say it isn't necessary to stop it and force all the leaves to fall.

They recommend 6 weeks of winter nights below 55 F / 13C. Many people get a flush of flowers with Den. nobile hybrids in early winter, then again in spring, due to low night temperatures through the winter.
