Never give up untill its truely dead... Male
Default Never give up untill its truely dead...

Got a dendrobium Nestor last summer and a couple of canes were broken ...saved them and have had them laying on the bench all winter.

Misting and spraying other chids meant they sat on the bench moist. They just sat there all winter and did nothing and I thought well they could make a keiki maybe even though most nodes had bloomed before and I did not see any eyes anywhere to even hope might grow .....Well never give up this week I have a keiki at the very bottom where it was broke off from the base of the original plant ...

I learned this as well, I keep each orchid 2 weeks after I think it's dead. I have saved some orchids that I thought were dead.

That is cool! Orchids have an unbelievable will to survive.

I'd written off a Disa a few weeks back but left it hanging about in the kitchen whilst it's seed pod ripened with a bit of water sitting at the bottom of a mug to keep the roots (if any) moist. Looked at it the other day, and a new green shoot had managed to summon up the will to survive. Yay!

An orchid's will to survive is truly amazing.

Someone gave me a whole batch of severely neglected chids back in December. Among them there was one sad little plant hanging on to one sickly fading leaf. Everything else was brown and dried beyond recognition. When that last leaf dropped I was certain the plant was doomed, but I kept it anyway. For fear of shock I chose not to immediately repot, but I continued to water it sparingly. About a week later I noticed a tiny bit of green emerging from the medium. I couldn't see any bulbs and the growth looked terrestrial, like a Spathoglottis. Last week I decided to repot the tender growth and while doing so I found a 2" rotten bulb buried beneath the badly decayed medium. Now I think it might be something from the oncidium alliance, so I repotted it according to my assumption. I really don't know what I have, but it's trying to live whatever it is.
