Phal type Dendrobium repotting/mounting?
Default Phal type Dendrobium repotting/mounting?

I've got a NOID Phal type Dendrobium I got a while back. When I got it the poor thing was potted WAY too deep (5" up the PBs!) I did what I call a triage repot (pull out enough moss for 4 pots, raise the plant and fill in with coarse bark) just to get it through and it seems to be fairly happy for the moment. The flowers are almost done so I'm starting to think about what to do with it now. Here's my list of questions:
1) the flower spike has a root at the very bottom but no leaves. Is this just a random root or will leaves pop up later and turn into a baby?
2)how tall do these things get? How fast?
3) should I mount or pot it? I do love mounts....
4)if I pot it I need to put it in a pot tight to the roots right? (At the moment it's in a pot more than twice the size of the root ball)
5)should I leave it in it's triage pot until I see root growth at the base of the plant?

Yep, lots of questions. Sorry, I haven't had much luck searching for the answers. But I appreciate any light you could shine on the subject.

I'm not sure about the root at the base of the spike, I suppose you may get a keiki there - probably just need to wait and see.

Depends on the plant how tall it will get - some stay fairly small, others get quite tall. Generally tho, new growth may be somewhat taller than previous.

Can be mounted or potted.

Generally yes, pot small. If you don't have a pot that seems to be a good size - you can "shorten" the pot with styro, pieces from a broken clay pot, marbles, ...

The "ideal" time to repot is after new growth begins to grow roots.

Thanks WhiteRabbit. I was looking today and there is a second root nub coming out next the the first one. Me thinks I'll take your advice and watch it for a while.
I will also be on the lookout for a proper mount for this one. I get the vibe from this plant it would really like being mounted. I'm not seeing new roots around the base yet so I have some time.
Do you have any other tips on this plant up your sleeve? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks again for your advice!

I have a Phal type dend. that is around 4' tall and another that is around 3' tall. They are difficult to balance in a pot.
