Rescued Dendrobiums need ID
Default Rescued Dendrobiums need ID

Rescued a few dendrobiums from a local fix-it store that were on clearance. They were in flower at the time but this was over a year ago and since then have pretty much all dropped leaves except 1 and put out keikis- 1 at the base of the plant which I am leaving but the rest further up the stalk. Waiting patiently for the roots to get a bit bigger before separating.

Long story short- I have no idea what kind of dends they actually and am wondering how to ID them.

Still new to this orchid thing though beyond crazy about them and want them to do well.

I also have a cymbidium, a phalaenopis and a lady slipper and am wondering the same thing about them...

Thanks!

For common orchids, such as you have, there are so many hybrids all looking the same that it is impossible to tell exactly which one you have. Also, wen you getto the level of showing your orchids, it is irresponsible and can mess up a judgin system to guess at names.

But I will go out on a limb here and way you MOST LIKELY have a phalaenopsis type dendrobium. But we can't tell if it's that type for sure, without a pciture or two. But getting the type of den. You have will aid in the culture

Welcome to or his board! Please feel free to ask anymore questions you may have. We would love to help. Sorry about your id

More just wondering about care for them and what is best suited than ever planning to show them... hopefully pictures of the keikis are attached... wondering how much longer those roots should get too before separating from mother plant since they are posted as well...

They look like phal type. About the same culture as for a phalaenopsis, but bit higher light and a tad bit dryer. They can also handle temps a tad bit lower, but. They don't need them.

I read in you other post that you have them in glass pots. Do those pots have holes? I recommend repotting to something that has good drainage holes. So as to easier avoid root rot

I think that the keki's roots should be three one inche roots. But not positive there. You also don't have to take them off.

I'm not sure it's a Phal type. It look more deciduous to me but I could be wrong.

It does look like the green leaves at the top are actually keikis rather than parts of the main canes and that main canes are bare of leaves.

Hopefully someone will have more idea.

They only ever had leaves at the top- not down the stalks. I think they must have had trauma while at the shop- they were incredibly wet when I brought them home and there was considerable root rot when I repotted them. The roots have been trimmed and one of the plants still have leaves at the top of the stalk and a keiki that is growing off the bottom.

The leaves on it now are keikis with multiple roots growing down and out on all sides.
