You might be interesting in seeing this:
Den. Enobi Purple 'Splash' by hawaiiansunshine, on Flickr
My first impression was that there were two different plants potted in the same pot. However, after close inspection, it was found that the two different colored flowers were on the same plant--two inflorescences are splashed and one is all lavender. Researchers at the University of Hawaii indicated that this is not uncommon for mericlones. This can occur and it sure did on this plant. Orchid Center had 1000 plants of this clone. Only 5% of the plants had splashed petal flowers. The remaining 95% had all lavender flowers. The plant shown in this photo is the only one that had two different colored flowers on one plant.
By the way, my Enobi Purple is blooming bigger and better than ever. It won the Best Dendrobium in the Show at the Honolulu Orchid Society Show last month. I'll post a picture of the plant later.
As I mentioned before, buy only the blooming plants if you want to be assured of getting splash petal flowers. Otherwise the chances are good you will end up with a plant blooming only lavender flowers.

Thanks for the heads up! I would love to have one someday. I'm a sucker for dendrobiums!

Oh, if only I could get one! We are headed for Hawaii on Sat. morning for 3 weeks! Our last stop is Maui and I won't be able to import any orchids unfortunately. But I am hoping to visit Ivan Komoda while on Maui.

If you are spending some time on Oahu, you might want to visit Orchid Center in Waianae and H&R Nurseries in Waimanalo. Both accept visitors. Call ahead first.

Thanks so much for the tip. We are spending a couple days only in Oahu, but would love to go if I have time!

A local grower informed me last week that he will be getting this plant in soon.

If you get a chance, grab one quick with splash flowers. This is a very easy growing plant. The flowers are long lasting. The plant will stay in bloom for a couple of months. I'm still waiting for the award photo for my plant that was given a cultural award at the Honolulu Orchid Society Show in October 2010. The plant had a lot more flowers than this photo of the plant taken one year ago.

Lucky you Beverly, I'm jealous. Did they tell you the price?

No, and I did not ask. I was there yesterday but the owner was off on a speaking trip and his employee said "perhaps next week". I assume the plants will be on the smallish side, nothing like the one posted, but that's OK. That way I'll probably be able to afford it.
