Keiki - stressed mother Female
Default Keiki - stressed mother

Hello,

I had my first orchid 2 months ago. I am not sure but I think it is a D. bigibbum type. It has small flowers and kind of long leafs. When I got it it had 2 stems of flowers and after it gave 2 more but now it started to give only keiki (not at the bottom)
They told me that my plant is stressed.
If anyone can tell me how i can "unstress " it and if I can remove the keiki and replant it without damaging the mother.
Thank you!

Welcome to the OB. I can't help you with Dens, I'm not that familiar with them. When I see keikis on my vandas or others I get pretty happy. I'm sure others will answer your question better than I can. Again welcome.

Don't fret about your "den" being stressed. Wait until the roots on the keikis get to be about 3 inches in length and carefully remove them from the mother plant. While they are still attached give them a spray of water. Then again you may not desire babies so you can simply remove them and give them to a dear friend. Whatever you so choose you will not notice any immediate diference to you orchid. Have fun and enjoy the little one and don't you become stressed.

While it's true that plants will keiki if they're in bad shape and want to save themselves, with Dens keikis can be perfectly normal (and wanted!), and can also be the sign of some things that are wrong in your culture. Chances are your plant is not stressed at all.
Some Dens will produce keikis no matter what. But keikis can also grow if the plant is not getting enough light, or if you are feeding it with a fertilizer too high in nitrogen.

thx all for responding. It is true there was a very cloudy period lately , but I am not giving it any fertilizers . i started to give it a bit more water since the temperature and the sun light arose abruptly . Generally it looks pretty healthy. About the keikis I was thinking to pot both of them together . Do you think its a good idea?
