gotta run .

i got this
Dendrobium Mingle's Sapphire orchids hybrid orchid - eBay (item 110536785175 end time May-29-10 18:16:35 PDT)
how much did you pay? was it large? do you have a pic of the whole plant?
I use small clay pots as well. does it mean I need to water more often than suggested? do you get high humidity?

Also I have southern windows but in this season the sun is very high in the sky and the rays do not penetrate much into the window. I get more light in the window. Probably in the summer a west or east window is better than a south one

I think that's the same seller - it was between 7 - 8 dollars. I had tried bidding on auction, but never won, so I finally went to their website and just bought one lol.

Humidity here - especially in summer - is quite low, so it gets watered very often! In winter I watered once or twice a week. I think once wasn't often enough. I expect you may have higher humidity. But from my research into the parents - this plant probably doesn't want to dry out completely. So I try to keep it at least lightly moist. Tho it did get completely dry at least a couple times over winter. Didn't seem to harm it except for a bit of crimped new foliage when it began to grow again. As with all my orchids, I have a skewer in the pot to help determine when to water.

It's a very small plant. It was described as a large seedling, altho the description also said expected to bloom in about a year.

Yeah - I don't know about south windows in summer - have just been wondering this myself, if the plants I have been growing in a south window to hopefully get them lots of light should be moved now that the sun is higher in the sky - the south window doesn't really get any direct light.
But this plant has just been in east and west windows - the east window it had been in used to get a good deal of light, but there are over-grown shrubs in front of it now. This budded after I moved it into the west window that is less shaded. I don't know if it was a response to more light or if it would have budded in the east window just the same.

It hasn't seemed difficult at all. I think moderate light, and lightly moist seems to work

I had one of these I got it from a friend and potted it in moss...it went crazy.....I gave it to another friend and then got a freebie with an orchid I bought from clackamas orchids. It is tiny...only one growth, just started new growth, and potted in a tiny pot of bark. I should probably switch it to moss...it doesn't seem happy!

I have some nice moss... sometimes i wonder if i should use it more. Everything dries so fast here.or at elas a layer of moss on top. I use mostly coconut chips. Some like a lot, a few seem not to like it
Southern window does not egt enough light this time of year I am afraid but I bloomed Eulophia graminea, Dendrobium sulcatum n some others. Put some Encyclias outside on the fire escape but got soem leaf tip burn

yeah - I mostly use chc too - at the time I got this tho - I wasn't sure how best to grow it and had been thinking "Den - likes to be drier" - I was mistaken lol. I had thought about repotting it into chc/plastic pot to retain more moisture -but it's doing nicely, and is established in the pot now, so gonna leave it til it's due for a repot, and then change it up. It's been my experience that most Dens don't like being repotted, so I try not to disturb them unless it's necessary.

I too don't use moss really except for mounting. It does tend to be very dry here, and I should maybe give it more of a try. I did recently pot a phal in moss - overturned net pot inside - and with the amount of roots this plant has, I am pretty certain it will be ok. Especially now that I have learned to water Phals by root color. I hope anyway lol

Den victoria-reginae likes to stay moist. Mine blooms multiple times during the year. I have it in the highest light section of the shadehouse with the Dendrobiums which is probably 3500 ft candles for at least 5 hours a day.

Although it is listed as cool - intermediate, mine seems to do fine in the temperatures here (its hitting 90s during the hottest part of the day), but I do have a misting system on a timer which cools off the house.

Your blooms got most of the v-r color instead of gonzalesii (now reclassified as ceraula) which tends to be more fuchsia/pink with a white-ish lip.

Since it is drier in your neck of the woods, potted looks like it works just fine, but they are pendulous and will grow like a bush when they are rafted.

Good growing! Lovely blooms!

Hi White Rabbit,

This is a delightful bloom. I love the colour! I have several of these dendrobium plants that seem to hang down and are very leggy. One of my smallish ones has a stem that is about 18" and very skinny at the base. I have it staked in a downward curve because I fear it will just break off at the edge of the pot.

What conditions are best to get these guys to bloom? I have several dendrobiums of different types. Do they all need the same conditions?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, P
