Default Grocery Store dendrobiums in coconuts

I cant pass up anything under 10 bucks that blooms and has orchid next to it

these even had tags one is an Emma Queen
and the other a Chan Hsiu Gold ‘Fuji’

when I looked at the roots these were grown in coconut HUSK. I have had a dendrobium before and well ahhh my watering nature got too him and I drowned him ..
These in the husks were bone freeking dry and wont hold water..I like that Husks stuff

I going use some mesh on these instead of the clay pots and hang em up on my orchid rack in the window. Is that acceptable treatment for a dendrobium in husk or should I move them outside with my wood mount orchids? I already think they would do better outside in the shade than a window..

I have heard tales of these Dens literally growing in a coconut husk. I would think it would like being outside. I know there are people here who grow them outside (I only have a couple of these) and can probaby advise you

I grow my Dens in semi-hydro and they LOVE it.

Here are a couple of links to the process.

If you are a chronic over-waterer (like me), this is a great way to grow them.

I especially like the green one. FYI, they appear to be Den phalaenopsis type hybrids which don't really require a winter rest period. They like lots of water during the growing season and bright sunlight (NOT direct)...in Houston you might need some good shade cloth. They should do well in your growing zone.

Do you mean the chips of coconut husk? (known as CHC... coconut husk chip)

I got in a mixture of CHC and bark. My dens were grown inside last year and grew fine, they have spent part of this year outside already and are currently in my greenhouse as they were getting a little too much sun. They seem to grow just the same as in bark and seem quite happy either inside or out. Here in the UK they dry quicker outside than inside, but that's the only difference.
