I think there is a 3' pot in there...

The plant has just been growing on itself for years.

Culture tips, dry cold rest in winter. Heavy watering upon the warmer days. Going from really dry to really wet seems to be a factor.

Nope, my boss has been growing that plant for a very long time. Consequently, it is also in the greenhouses I work in.
