Calvin.
Nice flowers. You're right, the flowers can have even darker orange tips.
This is a clone of a very unusual selection from the Den Frosty Dawn hybrid. Frosty Dawn is: Lime Frost 4N x Dawn Maree 'GJW' 4N, so the parentage is [(scabrilingue x cruentum) x (formosum x cruentum)]. The Dawn Maree 'GJW' is an excellent clone with a very large dark lip &, unlike most Dawn Marees, blooms on a good portion of the cane rather than only near the top. The 2 parts cruentum help make the Frosty Dawn lip dark orange rather than yellow. The original scabrilingue used in making the Lime Frost had an orange rather than the normal yellow lip.
So this version of the Frosty Dawn hybrid has a dark bright orange lip throughout the cross. I'm not sure where the orange tips came from. It is very rare in dendrobiums of this type. There were other siblings with orange tips, but 'Wings of Gold' was one of the better ones.
The scabrilingue ancestor gives Frosty Dawn a very nice sweet fragrance ... much better than the musty sweet fragrance of scabrilingue. However, scabrilingue is semi-deciduous in winter and drops many of its old lower leaves. As you can see on Calvin's plant, this trait has been passed somewhat to the hybrid. This can be disturbing to see, unless you know what is happening. But I suppose this happens to a lot of deciduous dens.
Calvin. Judging by the size of the plant, this must be one of the plants I brought up to you last August. But I think you might be taking too seriously the advice about good drainage. Looks like the plant's doing real well, but with the roots so bare, you might need to water quite frequently, even in winter.
Looks like the new cane is doing well & adapting to your conditions. Nice bloom.
