I've been told this is a dendrobrium, but am wondering what specific type it is. The plant has lost many stalks and has not flowered in eight months (which is unusual for it, as it usually flowers every three months). I'm hoping to learn more about it so as to better care for it. Any clues as to it's identity or care are helpful. Thank you.

Normally, I don't like to give a name to a plant without a tag ... unless I know a lot more about it's background (NOT "I got it without a tag real cheap from Big Box Store.")

However, from the photo of the plant, I would say that it's a latouria dendrobium. From the photo of the flowers, I would conjecture further that it has in its background the chartreuse flowered Den convolutum and probably Den atroviolaceum. My guess would have been Den Andree Millar (atroviolaceum x convolutum). Den Andree Millar gets to be a fairly tall and leggy plant (which yours is not).

Besides the relatively short size of your plant, your description of the blooming habit of the plant ("flowers every three months") suggests that it is NOT the original version of Den Andree Millar (which used convolutum and the normal sized atroviolaceum) The normal sized atroviolaceum blooms only once a year in late winter/early spring, and even when paired with convolutum, which blooms frequently, the original version of Andree Millar only blooms once (or sometimes twice a year.)

We remade Den Andree Millar several times, using the 'Pygmy' version of atroviolaceum (this atroviolaceum blooms 2-3 times in a year, for only 2-3 months each bloom, in contrast to the 4-5 months for the normal sized atroviolaceum). With the convolutum and 'Pygmy' parents, it is quite easy & common for this Den Andree Millar to bloom every 3 months, It will bloom on old growths, as well as new mature growths. I would comfortably guess that your plant is that hybrid.

Culture and background for this hybris is similar to other latouria dens discussed in other recent threads on latouria dens.

Default Thank you.

Thank you for your help; it's much appreciated. I will research the hybrid you suggested and treat the orchid accordingly.

Default Research complete!

After doing some research of the Den Andree Millar, your assertion was right on! I thought I remembered the name from when I purchased the plant a few years ago, and was able to quickly confirm with a quick google image search. Thank you so much!
