Good luck convincing your wife about making a detour to RF Orchids. My suggestion would be to not even tell her where you're going. Just head in the direction of Miami, and then innocently blame everything on Mapquest.

Homestead is about 1 hour south of Miami.
I love the I75 through the Everglades between Naples and Miami. Stop in the middle of nowhere and look at the birds, alligattors, vegetation.

Take an individual air boat tide [much better than the larger ones for groups].

Actually maybe you should go to Miami instead of Tampa. Most likely it is more interesting and the ocean is a lot warmer too!

Thanks for the suggestions! Somehow I'm not hopeful the wife won't notice having to stop an extra 2-3 times to nurse the baby... She might also get a little antsy when we don't get to her parents' house in the usual 12 or so hours. Maybe I'll just wait until she falls asleep and claim I 'accidentally' took I-10 all the way to Pensacola, then 'accidentally' went all the way back to Jacksonville before going back to I-75 again; then if she doesn't put her glasses back on and look at a road sign, I'm home free! Or maybe not...

You should really stop and look at the Everglades anyways.

Southern Florida is also more multicultural and can be more interesting too... And the ocean is always warm there. The water around Tampa might not be ideal for swimmming this time of the year
