Default Dendrobium aberrans

This was sent to me in a trade in very sad shape in 2007. This species seems to be a very vigorous grower as it quickly turned around and took off growing. I grow this one mounted on a piece of oak burl in I/W temperatures given bright Cattleya type light.

Nice, Tom! I just love everything about this little Den. Is yours fragrant? Inquiring minds want to know...

Tom it's very cute. I've liked this little one for a very long time. Might have to include it in my spring order.

Hi! Since it seems you're doing great with your Dendrobium maybe you could give me an advice abot mine. I have it for about 6 months now and it is shooting new roots continually, which is good. However it tried to develop 4 or 5 new bulbs and just one made it (and lost 2 out of 3 leaves on it's way). What am I doing wrong? It grows 7-8 inches under T5 bulbs.

Hi piti!

I don't grow aberrans, but do grow Aussie Chip (aberrans x atroviolaceum), and atroviolaceum - both like to remain moist, and no rest period. Mine both get moderate light.
I have read these like to be snug in their pots (if potted)

Tom. Good recovery job.

whygreenberg. Den aberrans has a very nice light sweet fragrance. Mornings usually.

piti. I'm wondering if your plant is a Den aberrans. 7-8 inches seems to be very tall for this species. 2-4" is more like it. Few very short fat pbulbs, whether grown W/I or cool. Also, multiple new growths seems unusual.

Here's a photo of a typical plant (it's in a 2" pot). Note the fat short pbulbs with only 2 leaves on top. Second photo is a flower spike from another plant.

IF you are giving too much fertilizer during the fall through spring period multiple growths may result. Losing the growths may be due to insufficient watering.

catwalker808: First of all thank you for your reply. I'm afraid you misunderstood me. My plant grows at 7-8 inches distance away from the T5 lightbulb. It's not the plant's size. Also, I do not use fertilizer at all, since I keep geckos in the vivarium. The leaves seem narrow to me comparring to yours plant. Here're the pics - on the first you can see new shoots that later kind of dried up; second pic was taken today :

piti.
Comparing your first photo to the second, I believe the plant sitting on the bottom of your terrarium is in very soggy conditions. The roots look ok in photo 1. But in photo 2, many of the roots look discolored & may be rotting. The leaf drop on the mature canes & the dieback on the new are also consistent with soggy root conditions. The leave & bulb shapes may also be the result of insufficient light as well.

The neoregelias also seem to be a little lighter in color than they should be.

I would suggest you lift the aberrans off the bottom where it would still have a lot of humidity, but no soggy roots.
