How to get several spikes of the one cane?

Hey guys, is there anyway to get several spikes off the one cane, either at one time or successively, or is it simply down to the genetics of your den? I'd like to know as I recently got a D. "Emma White" with several old spikes on it and I'd like to know if it's just that plant, or the conditions it was grown it, and also if I can duplicate it with my other plants.
