Fragrant yellow - Den Lemon Ice - Orchid Board

This den has a light spicy sweet fragrance, thick firm substance and blooms for nearly 2 months.

Den Lemon Ice is also a cross we made: Den trigonopus x cruentum. It's a nice hybrid ... unfortunately, the red lip of cruentum did not come through. Both parents are also nigrohirsute (formosum type) dens.

I have this plant and it seems as though it's just getting to blooming size. I was wondering about how you keep it catwalker, as I've read some conflicting info. Do you give it any sort of rest?

About 6-8" tall. It can be mounted or potted in very loose medium.

orkie. The 2 parent species are a little different in their growth cycles & cultural conditions. Cruentum is warm to intermediate and prefers bright light. It is evergreen and active throughout the year if kept warm enough and bright enough. It can also bloom more than once throughout the year.

Scabrilingue, on the other hand is intermediate to warm & blooms in the spring only. It normally drops leaves on older pbulbs during the colder months. It passes on this tendency to some hybrids in that they may drop some of their lower leaves in the cooler, lower light periods.

Scabrilingue itself needs to have a lower water no fert rest period during the cooler season. Cruentum needs no rest period as long as it is kept reasonably warm & has bright light.

I assume that you grow under lights in NYC, so the temp should not get too cold in winter, although it probably goes down at night. Don't starve Lemon Ice & it doesn't need chilling to bloom. Just cut back on the water during to cooler months if your growing area is cooler. If you can keep it warm & bright enough, your plant may produce more growths, and possibly bloom twice a year. If not, it should at least bloom in late spring. Flowers will last about 1-1/2 to 2 months and be fragrant.

Thanks catwalker, I'll water a bit less as it gets colder, the plants are in a window shelf and go down into the low 60's at night. I knew the parents had different cultrure and wasn't sure how Lemon Ice should be treated because of that, so it's good to know that it doesn't need a real resting period.
I actually don't grow under lights except some minor supplemental for winter (I have large, west facing windows with no obstructions in a 4th floor apartment), and I haven't had any trouble blooming Dens (nobile hybrids, aggregatum) so I assume this one will be getting enough light to bloom as well, it hangs out in the same area as the aggregatum.
