Question Dendrobiums What is the Difference?

O.K. I have many Dens. but I am a bit confused as to which ones get the winter rest. I would love to see photo's of the different types of Dens. and some input as to their winter care. I have been treating them all the same and for all I know I have all the same variety .

Thanks Sheridan

Based on advice from other OB members .I generally rest my nobiles, plus I have a Den Anosmum that I quit watering as of Oct 31 and start to water on or about Valentine's day. Tried this last year and got good results. The Phal type dens I do not rest, just water sparingly in winter. Just my 2 cents worth.

Question

Thanks Bellini Girl however is there a difference in their appearance ie: leafs, canes where flowers bloom from etc.?? I could have two different types of Dens and I would not know the difference.

Lecent, do you spray your anosmum and nobile when you stop watering? where do you keep them? I ask because I wonder if tehy are kept in some apartment like I do there is not so much a temperature drop and they may require a little more water than if they were somewhere cool / semi-cold

Not a drop of water. When the bloke i bought the anosmum from said "No water" I was a bit doubtful. However, it turned out fine. Only started water after the buds formed. The anosmum is kept in my bedroom near a window (hanging) Window stays open about 3 inches..even in winter (hubby has been told to get another blanket for his side of the bed) My nobiles I keep in a bay window off my kitchen...it's cooler there...and yes the window stays open a bit for air movement. Not all my nobiles lose their leaves.

Will try to take some pics later to show you some of mine. The buds on the nobiles form along notches on the canes. Some of mine are actually starting to spike but I could not get a clear enough pic. In any case they are just emerging. On the phal type dens..no rest required..the flower spike emerges from space at top of leaf. Same on my kingianum. Can you post pics of the dens in question??

well when do you start the rest?
I have 2 windows could put all the resting dendrobiums in the one far from the bed.

it seems your cracked window may give a long inactive winter rest not just to your dendrobiums but also to your husband!

My issue is that some of my dendrobiums are not estalished yet and I wonder if it would be better to risk not having blooms but giving a way for the plant to get established.

I also have a Den Hamana that is some sort of kingianum hybrid. it is still outside 40 F . leaves look thick and healthy a bit purpleish and has a bunch of keikis.... guess will wait till mid nov for the rest.

i also have a nobile keiki in S/H
