You're right: in young plants the bulbs are close together, but soon they will get more distant, as you can see on my plant (mostly 10-12 cm apart). The bulbs in the photo are relatively small (3-4 cm, compared to 5-6 cm in the wild), but they all have flowered/will flower (this year 5 flowers on the whole plant).
I grow it in my greenhouse. It's a pretty tough plant, so I think you can grow it in your garden. The only thing is - but that also goes for the apartment - that humidity might be too low for the free growing roots, so you would have to mist very often.
