Catwalker, is this a stable variant? In other words does it always bloom the same way or will you sometimes get the splash and sometimes not?

Quiltergal. The flowers are always like this. Of course this is the first time it's had so many flowers and this nice arrangement. If you like this unusual pattern, I also posted a Cattleya chimera thread.

Hey Catwalker,
That is a beauty! I would love to have one of these in my collection!

I did a little research for you in OrchidWiz...Den. Enobi Purple = (Den. Enobi Komachi x Den. Laguna Princess).

It is 78% Den. bigibbum, 10% Den. phalaenopsis, 3% Den affine, and a small amount of 7 other species.

This particular clone was given a JC in 2007 at a show in Hawaii. A JC is a Judges Accomodation, which is given to a plant with an unusual characteristic, which in this case was the "striking, uniform, clear white chimera pattern". FYI

Im sorry, but i dont think its a dendrobium x phaleonopsis hybrid, that wouldnt work. i think its just a softcane dend, i dont know how much you know about these, but they arent anything to do with phals.
perhaps ask some of the other members for an exact ID

shadec, this one confused me for a while, but these are known as Phalenopsis type Dendrobiums.

As far as I can work out it is just a name, nothing to do with crossing Phal and Den.

Also I believe the same thing is known as bigibum down in Australia which is probably whey you've not heard of it as the naming is difference in different parts of the world.

Thanks David.

Shadec.
You may be a little confused because of the names. Dendrobium phalaenopsis IS a dendrobium species. Dendrobium (capitalized) is the genus name and phalaenopsis (not capitalized) is the species name.

In contrast, Phalaenopsis (capitalized) is the genus name for many species and is not a Dendrobium.

So Phalaenopsis species and Dendrobium phalaenopsis are total unrelated, except that they are both orchids: kind of like cats and dogs, which cannot interbreed.
(the meow kind of cats, not Cattleyas and the bow wow kind of dogs, not undesirable flowers)

Hehe thanks, but im quite clear on that! :P
naming issues can be a problem here in Aus, because some groups accept different names for the same plant, meaning you can never find the right one!

The other thing is i had read somewhere about some newbie trying big interfamilial/interalliance crossess, and Dend x Phal (both capitals! ) was one, and it took a considerable amount of time to explain that this was, as you say, quite impossible.
