Dendro hybrid - first post
Default Dendro hybrid - first post

Hi all. Been reading the forums for a little bit and decided to join in on the fun. I have one main plant, but I've recently cut off and planted a keikei. I have two more attached to the "mother" who remains in bloom for the second time this year.

My orchid is labeled Dendrobium Queen Southeast. I searched the forums and the internet, but found now info. I think it is a Dendro Phal hybrid, but am not sure.

If anyone can provide some help with ID and specific care, I'd appreciate it. Currently I keep it in a kitchen window with probably a little too much light, but it grows well and blooms for long periods. I just recently started fertilizing it and hope I am using a good fertilizer (don't know if forum rules allow me to state brand names).

Thanks,
Brian

Hello and welcome to the Orchid Board.
Is this picture close to yours?

Sounds like you are doing a great job growing it. Yes, you can use brand names on the orchid board.

Joann,
That looks exactly like my plant.

The fert I am using is Better-Gro. Like said, I didn't start feeding my plant until very recently, but it bloomed anyway. This bloom however has fairly short spikes with only three flowers on each, so I think the plant definitely needs a little more attention.

If the orchid in the picture you linked is the same as mine, do you know what the specific hybrid is? Anything about specific care?

Queen Southeast is a den phal type. Blooms in the summer/fall in the northern hemisphere ... maybe a second time in during the year. Active growth in the late spring and summer. Less active in the late fall and winter months. Grow warm and as bright as you can. Less water and no feed october thru March. or even later, if your climate is cold. Occasional keikis on old canes are normal, Very good drainage essential.

Thanks for the great info! That helps quite a bit. One last q - do I repot right before or right after dormancy?

If you need to repot, do so when the new growth is starting, since that is the start of the most active growth period and the formation of new roots.

The only time you would repot when plant is inactive is if plant is under stress because the roots are waterlogged due to a soggy or undrained potting medium.
