In warm weather, I water 2-3 times a week - I use a shower setting on my garden hose (in the greenhouse). Submerged is more than I care to do, but if you are getting good results then keep at it. I think I would have a tendancy to rot roots that way - everyone has their own patterns, though.

In winter, which begins when the weather is winter-like (cold, not just cool), I just mist maybe once or twice a month - I put my finger in the potting mix - if it is moist, I wait. If it is bone dry, I mist to moisten - misting exposed roots is good as well, but in the morning, so they can be dry by evening.

The dens will grow roots as they want/need to, even in winter sometimes - this isn't dependant on your watering schedule. The idea behind lessing the water is to mimic the natural weather pattern - dry season in colder weather. In addition, the plant slow their growth, rest for a season, shed leaves on some plants, and wait for Spring.
