No, the flowers do not actually come out of the root structure. The roots originate from a central connective structure that is little more than a thin wiry brown axis. Yes, the flower actually also connect to this axis. But since there are no pseudo bulbs and leaves, one gets the impression that the flowers, figuratively speaking, are blooming from the roots.
Sometimes when I enter a greenhouse, I smell and recognize certain flowers before I even see them ... the pure sweet fragrance of Encyclia alata, or the captivating fragrance of Cycnoches chlorochilon, the light scent of cattleyas and sometimes the SMELL of bulbophyllums. I certainly notice these fragrances and smells.
However, since the funalis flowers occur at a hectic time of year for me and are not the most interesting feature of the plant, I simply never took notice of whether it does or does not have a fragrance. Sorry.
