Den spectabile is a New Guinea species with flowers that are so bizarre that they are fascinating. Plants grow in a wide range of conditions, from warm to intermediate. If grown very warm and fertilized heavily throughout the year, plants will become large and reluctant to bloom.
Best culture is medium to bright light in summer and as bright as you can in the winter. Water throughout the year, but stop fertilizing by early to mid fall. Plants seem to thrive on neglect and will then bloom at 12-14" tall. Grow well drained in a heavy pot to balance off the top growth. Blooming season is between January and March.
