Hi Steve -
I was told (by the owner whose plant nearly did me in) that it needs moisture all year; another grower said it does not like its roots disturbed. I obey both. I think this is in the group with atroviolaceum, johnsoniae, palpebrae, etc. (callista group, maybe?) which do not have a dormant period. They continue to grow slowly, even in winter. I don't fertilize it in winter, but I don't fertilize anything else, either, tho some could probably use it.
I grow all of my species dendrobiums much brighter in winter; some get water, some don't - this one does.
This one grew in a 2.5" nursery pot until last summer, when I bumped it up. It seemed to grow slowly for several years, then put on a real spurt the last summer before it bloomed for the first time.
The only other orchid that first time-every time gets me this way is Rhyn. digbyana - so it must be true love! The investment in time is worth it.
Cheers - Nancy
