Shriveled cane, root problem Male
Default Shriveled cane, root problem

Well, I got this plant about a month ago and have been noticing a few problems. I first let it get nearly dry to determine what the dry weight was so that I could heft it to determine watering weight. I since have, in the course of a month watered it four times. I really try not to over-water my Dendros. I noticed that one of the canes was creased or shriveled more than slightly and assumed it was alack of water. I thought that with regular watering it would recover but it has only gotten worse. Now the main cane has started to show signs of shriveling. The last time I watered it it tipped over in the pot as I had let the medium become too dry, so I soaked it good and long, to try to re hydrate the fir bark. As I was settling it back in place I noticed that the condition of the roots was off. Many of them had become "squishy" or hollow feeling. They were obviously dead as if due to over-watering. My medium is still pretty chunky so Im not sure wether to think that it is choked for air and over-watered or what. I took it out of its pot, clay by the way, cut all the squishy roots off, left the firm ones and have it in my lap now as we speak. Im not sure whether to spag n' bag it, (it still has an ok number of good roots), or whether to simply repot it. Help!
As a footnote I noticed that when I shook the loose medium out there were these little green spherical nubs 2-3mm across that were light green and were not necessarily attached to the plant. They look like root "spores" anyone know what these are? Sorry to be so elaborate.

Hello
sorry to hear about your poor den.
I am far from an expert - especially with dens and I don't know what the issue with the canes may be.
but as far as repot or sphag n bag I would proly go with repot since you do have some good roots - sphag and bag may just rot everything
but thats just me lol
I am sure more experienced growers will chime in soon.
Good luck and keep us posted

Sounds like the root problems were there when you got it. Repoting was a good idea. The round nubs were probably a material used by comercial growers to hold water in the medium. Good luck.
