The spike growing from the top of my dendrobium looks exactly like the new canes that are growing from the same plant at the same time. It looks like a new cane is growing on top of the old cane. Surely this does not happen. Will post photo when I figure out how to do it - do you use photobucket?
I don't see any roots (as yet), but it really looks like a whole new cane growing right out of the top! And it looks like the tip is starting to separate into leaves.
Is this where hardcane dends get keikis?
Wow...That's pretty odd! But it does indeed appear to be new cane growth. Something similar has happened with my Laelia mixta. Two small leaves grew out of the sheath of one of its newest growths!
A keiki on a hardcane Den is usually a whole new plant growing up along the side of the original cane. You would see a bulb with a few leaves and it's own little root system.
This one is very interesting. It looks like the cane just decided it should be taller!
