Den. Thanas Blue

I received Thanas Blue as a gift; it is planted in sphagnum moss & some of the leaves are now turning yellow. Should I leave it in moss or put it into a mix or wait til Spring? My only experience is with phals so any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Have you seen it in flower, because I can't find Thanas Blue on the RHS search site to see it's parentage?. I'm curious if it blooms from the apex or from the sides of the pb's. Some dens are deciduous and it could be normal that you are losing the leaves and you would drastically cut back watering for the winter so you could wait till spring to repot. Otherwise I normally grow all my dens in a chopped coco shell mix.

It was delivered by a florist with Den. Thanas Blue on the i.d.; it blooms from the apex. I'm taking your advice to drastically cut back watering. Your reply was most appreciated.

if it is blooming from the apex then it is most probably a den phal type and so you would still water in the winter. Just not as often, if growing indoors I would say once every 2 weeks.. alittle more if it's really dry in your home. Are the bottom leaves dropping? That is normal for some den phal plants.

I see that you are in Ga., zone 6b which must be Northern Ga. I am in SW Ga. but I would repot out of the spagh. Our humidity is high in Ga. and have had excellant results with coconut husk chips...you might want to add a little perlite & charcoal, but not necessary.

Bought it at the grocery store. Here's a rather poor pic of it:



It was grown by Kerry's, but I also have found nothing (except this thread) about it anywhere. So far mine is pretty happy and blooming away, but it did drop a couple of leaves on lower part of the blooming pseudobulb.

Mine's potted in what looks like a huge, split chunk of palm wood. I'm in Newnan GA, and as you can see my tiny collection is in the bathroom. All are doing well so far. I water them when I happen to remember to, but they get at least two good steam baths every day!
