Talking Den. atroviolaceum

I bought this little one in early June 08 from H&R Orchids. I saw one Steve had and it was at first sight. It had just finished blooming when I got it. This round I can claim! There are 7 spikes total The really cool thing about these guys is they will bloom twice from the same growth! I'll update this thread when they are all open. Should be quite a show. Thanks for lookin'!

That must be one very happy plant for it to put on such a show! The flowers are slightly strange looking, but beautiful. Is it a big plant?

Terri - that sure is a beauty! Was it fall-blooming when you got it? Here (deep south, USA) these are spring (mid-April) blooming.
Also an attractive plant without flowers (and you can't say that about some orchids!).
Very well grown! Regards - Nancy

I love this kind of Dendrobium, but they are not easy to find here and when you find one they want to rip you off. Congrats on your flowers, Terri!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. I think this would be one of the plants I'd have to take if the house were on fire!

Camille, it is a strange looking flower. I think that's why I like it so much. Most of the Dens in the Latouria group have these nodding "Flying Nun" type of flowers. It's quite compact, almost mini, only about 6 inches tall from the bottom of the pot to the top of the leaves.

Mauro, too bad these are so hard to find there. Hopefully in time you'll be able to find them at a reasonable price.

Yvan, I recounted the spikes and there are actually 8 (one was hiding down in the leaves).

Nancy, the info I have from H&R says they bloom twice a year Sp & Fa. The blooms are supposed to last for months and months.

Roly, I was drooling over the new H&R list this morning. This plant is seed grown #19007 Den. atroviolaceum 'Pygmy' x sib. There are 2 versions. One grows to about 8" and mine to about 6". It's been used in some awesome hybrids too.

This plant is very easy to grow. It's only quirk is it doesn't like to dry out. I'm growing it intermediate-warm, water 2-3 times a week in the summer when it's hot. We'll see if it demands as much in the winter. No rest. I like this one a lot.

Awesome!! Im glad I could help influence your habit!! Does yours smell? Mine had a chocolatey smell in the middle of the day. Ive got a bunch of new growth right now, so hopefully I will be able to get 2 blooms this year! The fact that the flowers last for well over 2 months is a definite plus for this species!
