Default Dendrobium Nobile winter rest

Hi

I have a Dendrobium Nobile Wave King 'Butterfly'. In order to get blooms in the spring, I was told to start letting the plant dry out a bit starting in october, and then give it a real winter rest starting in november. However, I let my plant dry out for one day, and last years pseudobulbs are as thin as a twig, and completely depleted of moisture. The new mature canes, however, appear normal. Also, this plant is still growing new roots and has three keikis which I have not removed. Could it be too early to start letting my plant dry out a bit?

Thanks!
Cam

Nope! They do get thin, like that. They will stop doing the keiki thing as soon as you stop withholding water. Just trim the keikis off and try rooting/growing them. May, or may not, work. My canes get really dry and shrivelled over the winter. That's a good thing as long as you have several years shrivelled canes for the plant to draw from. Whe the new growths, and new buds emerge next spring, start watering again. Show us the photos.

The only conern that I have is that
1: the plant is fairly young, with only a few older canes, so I do not want to kill it.
2: since I bought it during the early summer, it took until about late july until the new roots started to emerge. However, that means that the plant is still growing vigorously... Should I wait until the root growth slows before starting the winter rest period?

I've been refrigerating my nobile overnight since the 1st of this month, and plan to do so until the end of the month. I've been misting it in the height of the afternoon sun and have given it a splash of fertilizer once over that time span. As far as its winter rest, the watering should be about the same, right? What about sunlight? And feeding?

I've always been told to stop watering and feeding on Halloween and resume on Valentine's day. But Terry from Forestview Gardens says you should stop feeding in late summer and reduce water at end of Oct. but not to completely eliminate it. I had been following the Halloween to Valentine's regime and getting blooms but not a very good showing of them. Terry said this is what he does. Attached is a link to their site and under culture there are some instructions for Nobile Dens. Forestview Gardens, Paphiopedilum Orchid Specialists, Orchids for sale, Orchid Care, Vancouver, Canada

Also Yamamoto has some info on their culture:
