Question Den Sun Light 2010 - Questions

Den Sun Light is a large hard cane den. The canes are 18" - 24' tall. The flower is 3" across and has the slightest pink blush in the petals and throat.

Many of my hard cane dens are blooming later this year. Some, like this one, by 3 - 4 months.

This past summer I tried to place them in my backyard so they would receive more sun, both in duration and strength. And increased their water and balanced (13-13-13) fertilizer. Most of the dens responded well with more and larger canes. But as fall approached, flower spikes were fewer and shorter.

One problem that I have identified is that the coconut husk (large chunks) that they came in have become very spongy from the summer routine. So I think as temps cooled and the plants slowed down growing they did not like the now soggy media.

Questions: What media might I consider switching to for large hard cane dens ?? I don't have coconut husks available locally.

Question 2: Might a change from a balanced fertilizer in late summer / fall help with flower production ??

Thanks

Charlie
