Thanks everyone! It's done. My friend had a dend. hybrid she got as a gift two years ago and she brought it to me to repot. The dend. was in moss to begin with, then it was soaked due to someone else watering it wrong a week ago while she was on vacation. I was anxious to get it out of moss and let it dry out some. The roots are okay, but a couple leaves are yellowing.
Also, we have not had more than two hours of sun in two weeks. I'm serious! It has been raining/cloudy every single day for two weeks. Rain and downpours is about it for this good ol Vacationland State.
My poor orchids and gardens. I can see how this effects everything.
Thanks for all your imput....that's wonderful help.

Den. Potting Medium
Default Dendrobium potting medium

Hi there, I have just bought this Dendrobium Berry x SQ/Josa. This plant looks pot bound in its tiny pot, and I think I am going to replant. Can I use only spagnum moss for a Dendobium like this one? And how often should I water with a spray bottle? (I am still trying to find out what the SQ/Josa stands for in order to know what hybrid it is and what the flowers might look like).

FYI, Dendrobiums like a lot of other Orchids ENJOY being root bound...from your picture, this particular Dendrobium isn't there yet.
Most Orchids can thrive in their media for about 2 years before it has to be changed. There are a lot of factors involved to change sooner or later...but average is 2 years.

When the roots are growing or the psuedobulbs are outside of the pot in a large mass, then it is time to change pots, and then only to s slightly larger pot.

Hope this helps out...?

As to the watering, depending on the hybrid parents, you water frequently...meaning that when the media is almost dry. You then water again, otherwise wait to water.
I usually water ever 2 days, with breaks in between to of up to 2 more days of dry media (makes sure the media is dry and root rot avoided...just my method though!).
My best suggestion is to read up on the Dendrobium family and apply the specifics to your methods.

Mark

Thanks Mark, I will use your advice and wait a bit longer before replanting. I think I was also on a too frequent watering routine- a little water once a day. Thanks for the reply.

Anton, you can still repot, especially if your medium is breaking down, or you're not sure when it was repotted last. Just use the same size pot or smaller depending on the size of the root mass. I prefer to repot all my newly purchased plants just so I know what's going on down in the root zone. I've not had a Den sulk due to a repot yet.

Maybe it will be best to replant, the pot is being squashed oval by the roots, and I have no idea when it was planted.
Can I use only spagnum moss for a Dendobium like this one, or does it hold to much water?
