Bringing Den. parishii seedling out of dormancy
Default Bringing Den. parishii seedling out of dormancy

I purchased this Dendrobium parishii 'H. H. Huangi' around Nov 24th 2024. It's a seedling in a 2in x 2in x 3in pot. Currently living in the plant room under LED lights, close to the humidifier to create a humid, but not wet environment (think cool misty with a breeze).

The winter rest went well. I've given a couple waterings during the rest with just tap because I'm new and nervous. I dont expect this seedling to bloom yet, but as of recent I saw a new growth. Should i start regularly watering? Should I wait? Do I introduce fertilizer, or do I have to wait for the new roots to get a certain length like catasetums? How much bigger should I expect it to get when it's mature enough to bloom?

I would begin fertilizing now. It will need more and more water as the leaves expand. I think it's large enough to make a few flowers next Spring.

My parishii is still slowly loosing leaves. I’m holding back on the water still, waiting for buds! I do give it a quick spritz w no fertilizer once of twice a week (mine is mounted, so it dries very quickly.)

I'd start watering. Until it starts growing it has little or no need for fertilizer.

Mine is waking up now… buds on all canes from last year and new growths. It’s May 1 for the record, last dormant dendrobium from my collection to acknowledge spring..

my orchid mentor told me you can water orchids weakly weekly and do well.

Or you can fertilize a bit more and get more growth and more blooms.

I told him online people have all sorts of different theories, which one is right?

He said listen to the people who grow orchids, not the people that sell orchid fertilizers and tell you how it is done in theory.

In theory growing orchids is easy. In practice you learn it takes effort and a lot of time to figure out the right way to grow them.

Anyway with that being said I am really happy I have my orchid mentor. Because of him I have 2 spikes and 3 new growths on my plant.

If you want a good mentor too, I can recommend pam waters at orchids in bloom who is an excellent grower.

you can find advice she gives on youtube.

This plant was watered and fertilized well all year.
