Dendrobium anosmum New Growth
Default Dendrobium anosmum New Growth

Hello,

I hope you are all well.
My Dendrobium anosmum has decided to put out a new cane this late in the season.
I know it needs a dry and cool rest to bloom, but will letting this cane mature mean that I won't see any blooms next spring?

Thank You,
Tim

You may even get flowers on that cane next season, or the season after. (Older canes certainly can bloom no matter what that one does) The plant is fine. This winter you will probably get some cool nights, maybe even "real cold" (bring it in if night temperatures dip into the low 40's F) I know it is hard to imagine "cold" in Texas after this hellish summer, but it does happen. And a good cold shock may be all it needs to set buds even if it isn't dry. So let nature do her thing!

I would water as usual with a developing growth but not fertilize at all this late in the season.

@ Roberta: Thank you! This summer has been so bad that I'm lucky the vast majority of my orchids weren't even fazed by it. I'm so ready for winter, though.

@ estación seca: Thank you for the advice. I typically quit fertilizing about this time, so I will resist the temptation to fertilize this one.
