Wrinkling on latouria?
Unhappy Wrinkling on latouria?

Hey everyone.

I recently got a den. latouria, dendrobium normanbyense x rhodostictum to be exact. a lovely orchid!

However, it was potted up in bark and i was told it got daily waterings. i like to use sphagnum moss as soaking every orchid i own would be a hassle. so i potted it up in a mix of bark, sphagnum moss and perlite. I repotted it quickly after i received it. Yes it's in bloom, but i prioritide the plant's health over blooms which will return if proper care is given.

Initially the orchid had a bit of wrinkling on the pseudobulbs. the newest pseudobulbs was glossy and wrinkle-free. it srill is wrinkle-free but i noticed the older pseudobulbs started wrinklinh a bit more. I found this a bit strange. I watered it carefully. the moss stayed wet around a week, and then i placed it on a heat mat to help it with winter's temperatures. This made the moss dry up in a day or 2. It had planty of moisture as i watched the watering carefully, and i think the watering with the seedling mat may even copy what it was like drying up in bark.

My initial response was "the roots look fine so it must be dehydration" so i gave it some extra water. The photos show the orchid as it is now. the bulbs are a bit more wrinkly than the photo may show. it was hard to take good pictures of them.

It is also a young planyt..first time working with younger plants. so now i wonder...is it dehydration? or is the mix of new growth x young plant x buds and flowers. But wouldnt it have been more wrinkly upon arrival then?

What do you guys think?

ps: with the seedling mat i suspect the orchid will be hydrated for 3 to 4 days

Dendrobiums have thin roots that are easily damaged in repotting. I don't repot them unless new roots are just beginning.

Therens a new growth in the works that will shoot out new roots. Also, i checked the roots and i do 't see a single root that is turning brown or mushy. to be ho est, the root system looks just as fine as it was before. Any other insights as to why this could be happening?

That looks like normal creasing on the pseudobulbs to me. If you do a search for Den. normanbyense, you will find images that show similar pseudobulbs. Nothing to worry about.

That's a nice looking plant!

thank you! the wrinkling is a bit more prominent in real life opposed to photo. but i also just found out that if they dry out they like to wrinkle instantly. definitely happened with that heat mat, so i think it's indeed just okay!

thanks for the help!

I have noticed orchid leaving with an accordion effect (oncidiums) when they do not get consistent watering, but your plant looks just fine to me
