Ive actually heard that happens when you water them too soon after dormancy or if you water all the way through the dormancy period.

Hmm, interesting. Should you start watering when new growth appears orr wait until it's a certain length?

When you can tell for sure that the growths on the side of the old canes (not at the base of the canes where next years canes will come from) are definitely flower buds and not keiki, you can water whenever you please. If you water too soon, the plant will turn your flower buds into keiki.
