Dendrobium Anosmum questions
Default Dendrobium Anosmum questions

Hello, I am new here. I just found out about this site from a person on an orchid Reddit page I belong to. I apologize if these questions have been asked, and if the answers are available on the site somewhere, but I am just muddling my way right now and learning how to get around.

I acquired two of these plants last year in the first week in April. They were both in bloom, and from what I remember, the blooms lasted about a month.

They were in a bright sunny window all of this time and I watered them well. I also used timed release orchid fertilizer. Two psuedo bulbs emerged from each plant after they had finished flowering.

I am in Pennsylvania and stopped watering regularly in December because I read you needed to cut back on water and fertilizer in Winter.

The canes have appeared to stop growing. They are only about 15" long. The psuedo bulbs that bloomed last year were about 22" long.

Do they need to be longer in order to bloom?

They are still green with all of their leaves. When do the pseudo bulbs turn white? Do they have to lose their leaves first?

I have seen many for sale now that are in full bloom. I am wondering if some species bloom later than others. I sort of expected to see some change in them if they were going to be in bloom next month like they were last year, and I don't see any sign of emerging bulbs.

Any insight you have would be appreciated!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Den. anosmum, relatives and hybrids can be brought into flower at any time by manipulating growing temperatures. Ones on a natural cycle complete growth in late fall, have a winter with less water, then flower in spring. Den. anosmum doesn't need much if any winter cooling to flower; some relatives do.

In general you should continue watering Dens until the last leaf appears, then reduce. Stop fertilizing in late summer. If your plant was manipulated to bloom off-season it will be conused for a year or so. A key takeaway with Dens is to continue watering while they are still growing.

Default Thanks for your reply!

Thank you so much! I kept thinking the canes needed to get as long as the ones from last year. I just sort of noticed they appeared not to be growing any more. I will learn from this and pay better attention to that going forward.
