Hey, umm, I am really sorry my ignorance on the term "scape" kicked this discussion off. Honestly I had never heard the term used like this, and I *honestly* couldn't tell from the wikipedia article on "scape" nor from other sources what you meant. I have a very similar plant to the one this discussion is about and I just couldn't put it together. I have seen an orchid spike described as a "shoot", a "raceme" and a few other terms, but never scape and was totally boggled.
I really appreciate that folks stepped up to try to explain, and I apologize if you felt like their responses were slapdowns.
Personally one of the things that I like about this forum is that people with different perspectives comment. I like that people post the results of their research. I really don't think in this case anyone was doing it to troll or disrespect you, and I hope those inclined to share their research continue to do so.
FWIW, while we argue about the correct botanical name I'll nominate "raceme" as the most appropriate for a Dendrobium spike: "a flower cluster with the separate flowers attached by short equal stalks at equal distances along a central stem. The flowers at the base of the central stem develop first."
Anyway, sorry my question lead to bad feelings! I promise I was not trolling when I asked.
