What to do with my Den. Aphyllum Keiki
Default What to do with my Den. Aphyllum Keiki

Hi everyone,

I've had a Den. Aphyllum for just over a year now and unlike the some of my other Dendrobiums this one didn't show any new growth at the end of its winter rest /start of spring. But in the past month it has started sprouting a keiki and I have no idea what to do with it.

Would you suggest I remove it at some point and move to a new pot? But I understand that keikis are quite common with this particular species so do you think I could get away with leaving it as is?

I'd just leave it. The main cane looks quite green and firm. Mine does keikis all over the place, not a lot of growth from the main plant, but then the keikis bloom the next season. As the plant gets bigger, the bloomings get better, but it always has a spindly look.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll leave as is

I would follow Roberta's tip, and would not detach it from the old cane. It gets its nourishment from it.
These plants love water when they are growing, so I would put some sphagnum around the new roots so they can take water and grow.
In the photo you can see a piece of a broken cane with a Keiki developing in wet sphagnum. I never allow it to dry and the tiny plant just loves it.
