Den. aemulum 'The Ironbark Feather Orchid'

This was my first ever orchid -- I received it just over a year ago, and it's rewarding me with 76+ blooms! I'm very flattered considering it experienced all of my learning curves.

It generally lives outdoors here in Tasmania, AU. Summer temps are highs of around 83'F/28'C and lows of 10'C/50'F. With winter's arrival, it's been moved indoors as it's grey and overcast outdoors, with lows of 19'F/-7'C and hard frosts.

Growing on a ~5x8in ironbark slab. Highly fragranced - the entire house smells. Vaguely sweet, 'floral' scent.

Thank you for posting that. I did not know that D. aemulum was scented. There is a hill near us in a forest reserve where these grow wild on the ironbarks - but it’s beside a walking track so all the lower-growing ones have been pilfered by walkers so only the higher-growing ones remain. Pity, as we can see them but not appreciate their scent.

Yours is blooming really well so you must be doing something right.

Oh, that is seriously disappointing that people have been taking them they must look beautiful in their natural habitat, though! If you're able to find one for sale, I'd definitely recommend them for their scent alone -- you could even try naturalizing them in your garden if you have one! (Perhaps one day I'll be confident enough to divide this one...)
