Bud Blast on Den Speciosum
Default Bud Blast on Den Speciosum

I have a Den Speciosum that each year spikes multiple spikes but many blast early in bud development or at a minimum the end of the spike. I am curious if there is something that I might be doing that is causing this to happen. I live in AZ and have a fairly climate controlled greenhouse. There is a swamp that blows colder air int he day already because the temp in the greenhouse will already be getting warm in the days. I know that this particular species likes cooler temps to initiate spiking so am trying to not have them blast from too warm of days but maybe the cooler air from the swamp is causing this. It it very disheartening to watch what would have been an amazing display turn yellow and die. Anybody have any help with this?

I wonder if the high humidity from the swamp cooler might be an issue. I'm only guessing... looking what is different at your house from mine... Mine grow outdoors, so they experience a lot of variation in climate. Mostly it's very dry (I water less in winter, and Mother Nature doesn't provide much rain) So they're getting a combination of cool and dry in winter. Now, it's cool nights and warming days. Humidity is all over the map, but mostly ranging from "pretty dry" to "bone dry". Still mostly buds, have one spike on one plant blooming, suspect that the rest of them are waiting for a bit more warmth. Or not...
